Pitt may not shy from using top WR Boyd on special teams

One of the top wide receiver sin the ACC could be used on special teams this season. Pitt wide receiver Tyler Boyd, after leading the Panthers in receiving in 2013 as a freshman, could be getting some more time on special teams in addition to his receiving duties. Special teams coach Chris Haering told reporters this weekend he has no concern using Pitt’s best offensive weapon to light a fire on special teams.

“We don’t look at it that way, that he’s going to get killed,” Haering said, per The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “We look at it just like you would on offense. We’ve got good guys that are out there blocking the returns. So our hope is you don’t get free runners and guys that are going to get blown up.”

Boyd led the Panthers with 1,174 receiving yards and tied for a team-high seven touchdown receptions in 2013. He quickly made a name for himself while playing on the field with senior Devin Street for a dynamic duo. With Street moving on, Boyd will likely receive more attention as the go-to wide receiver. Boyd did not have any punt returns last season until the Little Caesars Bowl against MAC champion Bowling green. Boyd returned three punt sin the game for 69 yards, including one for a touchdown. He also was used on kickoff returns throughout the season with 19 returns for 425 yards.

Apparently Boyd is all in on the chance to contribute on special teams.
“Tyler is a special kid,” Haering said. “He is excited to do it, too — 100 percent bought in.”
