Georgia lands commitment from top in-state recruit

Trenton Thompson

Sometimes all it takes is one verbal commitment from premier recruit to build a truly special recruiting class.

Defensive tackle Trenton Thompson (Albany, Ga./Westover) is that type of talent, and he committed to the Georgia Bulldogs Tuesday evening.

Thompson, the No. 3 overall recruit in Rivals.com’s rankings, chose the home-state Bulldogs over offers from Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Michigan State, Ohio State, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Tennessee and USC.

“Georgia, they were my first offer,” Thompson said. “They were the first coaches that came down to see me and showed me the most love. Georgia has great coaches, and I have good relationships with them. The fan base has also showed a lot of love, and I also think that in the classroom Georgia can help me be the best student I can be.”

Thompson becomes the 18th verbal commitment to Georgia’s 2015 recruiting class. His inclusion helps the Bulldogs on two fronts.

First, Georgia keeps the state’s top talent close to home. It’s the second time in two years Georgia has been able to do so after being criticized in previous years for not being able to retain the state’s top talent.

Second, Thompson’s commitment will help build momentum for the Bulldogs on the recruiting trail. Other recruits will want to play alongside the five-star defensive tackle. When a team acquires a top recruit, the program usually see an uptick in recruiting. Thompson’s verbal commitment can help the Bulldogs round out next year’s recruiting class with plenty of talent.

It’s always a little disturbing when one of the first things a recruit says about a program is that he was shown a lot of love. Location, education, life style, chance to play on Sundays, all those make sense. But being shown love by coaches shouldn’t be the first thing out of your mouth.

Spreadthecheese is a tool. Do you over-analyze everything in your life? Bet you are a joy to hang out with.

I can somewhat understand the kids comment. He’s been the stud king all his life and someone stroking his ego and making him feel wanted gives him comfort. 18 year old males……..I can’t even begin to describe how unprepared we are to make important decisions at that point in our lives.
