Thursday it was reported that the Norman Police Department was set to hand off the results of an investigation involving Oklahoma’s Joe Mixon by the end of the week.
As it’s Friday, and the end of the week, that timeline has come to fruition.
According to multiple media outlets, the NPD has turned over all of the relevant information to the Cleveland County District Attorney’s Office. It will now by up to DA Greg Mashburn to decide whether charges will be filed against Mixon.
Late last month it was reported that Mixon was involved in an altercation at a cafe just outside of campus. It was alleged that Mixon punched a 20-year-old woman in the face, breaking four bones.
In a statement released by his attorney a couple of days after the incident surfaced publicly. it was claimed that Mixon was merely acting in self-defense.
The release ended by stating “[a]s we have always maintained, Joe has done nothing wrong.”
The investigation into the alleged incident has dragged on for more than two weeks.
OU said in a statement released July 30 that “Mixon is not reporting for team activities at this time. We will continue to monitor the situation.” The running back has yet to participate in summer camp with the erst of his new Sooner teammates.
Mixon was a five-star member of the Sooners’ 2014 recruiting class, rated as the No. 1 running back in the country and the No. 8 player at any position in the country. He was the highest-rated member of an OU class that was ranked 15th in the country.
UPDATE (4:45 p.m.): The Norman District Attorney’'s office charged Mixon with one misdemeanor count of an act resulting in gross injury, according to The Oklahoman.
As the Sooners prepare for the season, the team and coaching staff should do so with the expectations Mixon will not be in the lineup at any point this fall.Penalty for Mixon’s charge could carry up to one year in jail if convicted. The alleged female victim in the case was not charged.
