Report: ‘Significant friction’ between Bobby Petrino and Todd Grantham

Bobby Petrino

Bobby Petrino hasn’t changed much since his last tour with the Louisville Cardinals.

Even after failing miserably at the NFL level and then publicly embarrassing himself, his family and the University of Arkansas, it doesn’t seem like Petrino has learned from his mistakes.

There is now in-fighting among Louisville’s coaching staff with Petrino at the middle of it all.

“Sources with ties to the Cardinals’ football program and Petrino said there’s significant friction between Petrino and feisty defensive coordinator Todd Grantham,”’s Thayer Evans and Pete Thamel reported. “The two have feuded often since Grantham’s hiring in January.

“So much that one source insists Petrino would have already gotten rid of Grantham if not for his guaranteed five-year contract that pays him nearly $1 million annually.”

Evans and Thamel also spoke with Jamaine Brooks, who decided to leave the program this past spring. Brooks doesn’t paint a pretty picture regarding Petrino’s treatment of his players.

“He’s a mean guy,” Brooks told “He cusses you out. You’re never doing enough. He’s still Bobby Mother——- Petrino.”

“The way he came in doing business I didn’t like it. The way he treated people. He just wasn’t a good coach.”

Unfortunately, Petrino has proven to be a good game-day coach. It’s why a program like Louisville, which is transitioning to the ACC this season, decided to re-hire Petrino despite his checkered past. Petrino is 83-30 during his 10 seasons as a collegiate head coach. He helped place Louisville on the national scene when he led the Cardinals to a 12-1 record and an Orange Bowl victory in 2006.

Petrino was also able to sell Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich on the notion he wouldn’t be the same coach he was when he was originally coached for the university from 2003 to ’06.

“I believe Bobby Petrino’s a changed man,” Jurich said upon Petrino’s hiring. “Bobby has convinced me he’s a changed man

“Bobby has convinced me he’s a changed man. I told Bobby the coach I had here is not the coach I want to hire. I want the new Bobby.”

Petrino and Grantham will simply have to find a way to work together. Not all head coaches and coordinators do — ask Mike Ditka and Buddy Ryan — but they can still be successful. Even if they can’t, Grantham’s contract is prohibitive, and he’s not leaving Louisville any time soon.

“He’s stuck with him,” a source told

I would take everything Evans and Thamel write with a grain of salt. I am shocked SI keeps those two clowns around.

Bobby Petrino has more football knowledge in his left pinky toe than Brett Sobleski has in his whole whiny body.
Way wah wah, boo freaking hoo, so he curses ag his punk players. Grow a thicker skin. More sissification of America.

This is an off-season story–no one will care when the season starts. Coaches apparently hate working with Saban, it hasn’t stopped his success or coaches wanting to work with him.

Jamaine Brooks is now one of my favorite coaches. Not so much with Bobby “MotherF…..” Petrino.

Why does this douche bag keep getting hired? Because he wins. That is, after all, the only thing that matters.

Petrine may be a coaching genius, but also an unguided missile in basic human relations skills.

Soooooo glad he’s not here at WKU anymore, I was disgusted that the even hired him. Keep wasting space and being a disappointment to humanity Bobby

If Petrino doesn’t like Grantham now, wait til he sees him coach the D in live action. Grantham is an awful coach.

Even Lane Kiffen wonders how an A-holes like Bobby Petrino keeps getting jobs.

I still can’t believe he got hired away from GA. When I heard I was dumb founded that another program would “poach”
him. He might be able to scheme a defense but he can’t coach fundamentals. I mean UGA basically fielded an NFL all rookie defense in 2012 and he couldn’t get them to stop Trent Richardson in the SEC championship.

Petrino may be a scumbag but at least he can coach. Grantham is scumbag who will scheme an overly complicated Defense then tell the players to figure it out.

Todd Grantham is no sweetheart either, both these guys are world class opportunists and massive horse’s rears; truly a match made in heaven.

As a UGA fan – and Falcon fan – on behalf of my fellow Georgians, I wish those two nothing…. Not nothing but the best, just nothing. Louisville is actually where I was born and I feel so, so sorry for you people having experienced both men up close.

Petrino better be able to get his team to score a boatload of points because T.G. Can’t get kids at the college level to perform the schemes he concocts for his defense. A 12 inch thick playbook that might work in the NFL, but doesn’t allow the kids a chance to develop because they are standing around confused half the time on the field. Ask the defensive players that are at UGA if they miss him.

    I’m a louisville alum and a Petrino fan. 41-9

    Laxer, its called winning.

If the school and/or the AD thought he had changed, that’s on them…

That is simply what they SAY as there was a reporter there.

What they want is wins and if they get wins they won’t care what Petrino does (within certain limits of course).

He doesn’t have to be nice… if he wins…

If they lose or are middling, that changes everything.

What’s the old saying? A Tiger doesn’t change his strips. This is who Bobbi is. Don’t ever think he will change for the better.

I played for him back in the mid 80’s. We called him Lil Napoleon. From what I gather, the only changing he has done over the years, is he’s become an even bigger Ahole. It sounds like his ego and arrogance are as big as ever. Bobbi, cares only about himself.

Color me shocked, the guy who bailed on the Falcons and had a ‘little bicycle’ incident plus the guy who got in a spat with a coach after the Vanderbilt game and did the choking motion against UF when Chas Henry was in to kick a fg… yeah I would say this came out of left field.

    Article and comments are hilarious.

Come to find out, once you get past church leagues, head football coaches tend to be Type-A jerks! Compare and contrast what the same roster at Arkansas accomplished with and without him. Fault the dude for his personal life, but don’t pretend he can’t coach college football just because he’s “mean”.

And a special “ROFLMAO” at the guy who claims he’s glad he’s gone from Western Kentucky – I’m sure he was a stain on the proud tradition there, etc.
