Fresno State suspends top kick returner for USC opener

Dillon Root AP

If Fresno State is to upset USC in its opener, they’ll likely need a big play or two — or eight — on special teams.  In that vein, the Bulldogs have taken a bit of a hit on that unit.

The Left Coast FSU announced via a very brief press release that wide receiver Dillon Root has been suspended for the season opener this Saturday.  The reason?  “[A] violation of Athletic Department policy.”

The school added that “[t]his will be Fresno State’s only comment on the matter.”

Root played wide receiver in 2012 before moving to defensive back for the 2013 season. In spring practice, he moved back to receiver.

Last season, Root led all Bulldogs in kick returns (28) return yards (601) and yards per return (21.5).

The bigger news is that no starting QB will be named until Saturday according to Coach DeRuyter in his press conference this morning. It’s a game time decision. Two QBs will play.
