Detroit bowl game gets a new title sponsor too

Quick Lane Bowl

The Bahamas Bowl was not the only bowl game to receive a new title sponsor today. The new bowl game in Detroit, not to be confused with the bowl game previously held in the Motor City, received a new title sponsor as well. Say hello to the Quick Lane Bowl.

The Detroit Lions are organizing the new bowl game in Detroit, which replaces the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl. Having a local industry partner was important for the Lions. Staying true to the roots of the old Motor City Bowl, a partner in the auto industry seemed like a logical choice from the start.

“With a national platform to showcase the city of Detroit as well as Southeast Michigan football tradition, it was important for us to partner with an organization like Quick Lane who has a strong local and national presence,” said Detroit Lions President Tom Lewand, per a press release. “We look forward to collaborating to institute a great bowl game tradition at Ford Field for years to come.”

The game, featuring teams from the ACC and Big Ten, will be played December 26.

I can’t wait till this archaic bowl system goes the way of the dodo and we get a real, comprehensive playoff system.

I went to a Motor City Bowl once when my sister’s school went. I had a great time. Greektown is a blast.

Just what does Quick Lane sell? Never heard of them. Are they oil change “experts” like Jiffy Lube? What a waste of advertising money for an unnecessary bowl.

Quick Lane is a tire and auto center owned by Ford. I’ve only seen them as part of the service department and Ford and Lincoln dealerships.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that the bowl system will never completely go away.

With the Playoff, all these bowl games are going to become like the NIT, CBI, XYZ, and every other alphabet soup basketball tournament in March, just filler for far-flung sports networks and a nice trip for the teams that play in them.

It’s sort of a big nothing. You have a game organized by the Lions, who are owned by a member of the Ford family, held at Ford Field, sponsored by a Ford entity. Not a lot of outside investment to be seen here,
