Virginia Tech loses RB Shai McKenzie to torn ACL

Virginia Tech running back Shai McKenzie will miss the remainder of the 2014 season with a torn ACL. The running back confirmed the injury news on his Twitter account Sunday afternoon.

McKenzie, a freshman, tore his right ACL late in Saturday’s win over Western Michigan. McKenzie had injured the same knee during his senior year of high school too, raising the caution flag a bit more vigorously moving forward. McKenzie was able to enroll early in January to get a head start with the Hokies program. Before going down with the injury on Saturday, McKenzie had rushed for 87 yards and a touchdown on 18 rushing attempts, a season high.

McKenzie rushed for 269 yards and three touchdowns in his five games this season. As his season comes to an end, he was second on the team in rushing yards behind Marshawn Williams. Williams will now take on the lead role in the running game. The two had been splitting the first team reps and snaps, but now Williams will be the main running back. J.C. Coleman could move up the depth chart as a result and take some snaps to give Williams a rest at times, but Williams will likely be the main running back taking on the majority of the snaps out of the backfield.
