Gary Patterson said he “felt threatened” by Baylor player after TCU’s loss to Bears

The bad blood between Baylor and TCU runs deep, back to the 19th century, but it boiled over - at least in football terms - last season following Baylor’s 41-38 defeat of the Frogs in Fort Worth where Bears safety Ahmad Dixon was ejected from the game from targeting, but was seen laughing on the sideline by TCU coaches.

Gary Patterson and Art Briles had a tense exchange following the game, and in the post-game press conference Patterson challenged Briles to come to his house and fight him, or something. “The bottom line is, we’re not going to do that. Gary Patterson lives in Fort Worth. If he’s got a problem with me, here’s where I live,” Patterson said at the time.

No. 4 Baylor pulled out another hotly contested win Saturday, roaring back from 21 points down in the fourth quarter to beat No. 12 TCU 61-58 on a last-second field goal.

And once again, Patterson had something interesting to say when taking the post-game podium.

As first reported by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Patterson said he “felt threatened” by an unnamed Baylor player, and that the player had to be restrained by defensive coordinator Phil Bennett.

Patterson then used the attention-gathering tactic of bringing something up and then refusing to explain it, most commonly seen on Facebook walls of teenaged girls. “I’m not going into all that. It was disappointing. Coach Bennett was the one who broke it up. You can ask him,” Patterson said of the incident. He said the player’s remarks were related to his rant following last year’s game.

Reached by Travis Haney of ESPN.com, Bennett said the player “mouthed off” but never threatened Patterson.

"[There was] never a threat,” Bennett said. “I jumped on him and got him out of there.”
