Florida State extended the nation’s longest active winning streak to 22 games with Saturday’s victory at Syracuse. The last time Florida State lost was a regular season finale against Florida in 2012. Florida State has had a couple of close calls along the way, but have managed to keep the streak alive with a pair of ACC titles and a BCS national championship to show for it. On the opposite end of the college football spectrum you have UMass and Idaho. Both entered this weekend riding 12-game losing streaks dating back to last season. Only one survived this weekend
UMass brought an end to their streak of futility with a 40-17 victory on the road against Kent State. It had to feel good after coming so close to a win a few times this season. Quarterback Blake Frohnapfel had three touchdown passes and Lorenzo Woodley rushed for 160 yards in the winning effort. The win was the first for UMass on the road since 2012 (Akron) and just the third win in three seasons.
Idaho was nowhere close to as fortunate Saturday. Idaho was defeated by Georgia Southern, 47-24. The loss was the 13th straight defeat for Idaho. The last win for Idaho came last season against Temple on September 28, 2013.
Speaking of Georgia Southern, the Eagles are now 4-0 in the Sun Belt. This is Georgia Southern’s first year in the Sun Belt and as an FBS school, which means they are ineligible for participating in a postseason bowl game. They are, however, eligible to be crowned as the Sun Belt champion if they finish in first place.
