Chris Davis’ Kick Six helmet sells for $47,000 at auction

Auburn’s Kick Six touchdown to beat then-No. 1 Alabama will live forever in college football lore, and now the helmet Chris Davis wore for those 109 glorious yards will live forever in some Auburn graduate’s living room.

Davis’ helmet from Auburn’s 34-28 defeat of Alabama was sold at auction for $47,190 late Saturday night/early Sunday morning by New Jersey-based auction firm Goldin Auctions.

“We knew when we received this item on consignment it was something special and would be treasured by Auburn fans, alumni and college football collectors,” founder Ken Goldin told ESPN.com. “This helmet from one of the most historic and notable plays in college football goes down as one of the highest priced pieces of collegiate sports memorabilia ever sold, and certainly the most valuable that has been auctioned from a player or event that occurred within the past 20 years.”

It is believed to be the heftiest price ever paid for a college football helmet. Two-time Heisman winner Archie Griffin had a helmet, purportedly worn during his stiffarm trophy-winning campaigns of 1974 and 1975, sold for $28,680 earlier this year.

Davis wasn’t a co-signer of the helmet which means, true to form in college football, its unclear whether he made any money off the auction.
