No. 9 Georgia handling No. 16 Georgia Tech everywhere but the goal line

Nick Chubb and Sony Michel have combined to rush 21 times for 150 yards - more than seven yards a pop - and a touchdown. Hutson Mason has completed eight of his nine passes for 88 yards. The Bulldog defense has held Georgia Tech without, and the special teams have blocked a field goal.

But Georgia has lost two fumbles at the Georgia Tech goal line, and as a result the ninth-ranked Bulldogs and No. 16 Georgia Tech are knotted at 7-7 at the half in Athens.

The first came on a 2nd-and-goal at the Yellow Jackets’ 1-yard line. Chubb ripped off a 65-yard run to put the Bulldogs on the doorstep, but he was stuffed on 1st-and-goal and lost the ball on 2nd down, perhaps due to fatigue from the previous two plays.

Lightning struck again with just over three minutes to go before the half, this time on a Michel 13-yard run that was nearly a 14-yard touchdown, but Quayshawn Nealy popped the ball out at the 1, and Isaiah Johnson recovered it inside the end zone.

Georgia had only lost four fumbles the previous 11 games. It has lost two this half.

Georgia Tech responded by moving 80 yards in 14 plays and 2:56, capped by a Justin Thomas touchdown pass to Darren Waller with eight seconds remaining. The score helped the Ramblin’ Wreck avoid its first opening half shutout since 2008.

Georgia opened the game with a 10-play, 75-yard touchdown drive, punctuated by a one-yard Chubb plunge.

Georgia Tech will receive the ball to open the second half.
