Frank Beamer undergoes throat surgery, expected to coach in bowl

A medical procedure has sidelined Frank Beamer for the short-term but isn’t expected to impact his postseason coaching availability.

In a statement sent out a short time ago, Virginia Tech confirmed that the Hokies head coach underwent successful throat surgery recently. Beamer is expected to coach the Hokies in their bowl game, the destination of which will be announced Sunday.

“We waited until the end of the regular season to surgically address an issue with Coach Beamer’s throat,” said team physician Dr. Gunnar Brolinson stated. “The procedure went as planned, without complications, and he simply needs some rest before he returns to his normal routine. He’s been cleared to continue his game planning and film study and will return to the practice field as soon as possible. I fully expect Coach Beamer to coach in his 22nd consecutive bowl game.”

According to the release, Beamer is home and is resting comfortably in Blacksburg.

Beamer currently leads all active coaches with 271 wins. His 271st win came against in-state rival Virginia in the regular season finale, pushing Tech’s record to 6-6 and extending the nation’s second-longest bowl streak.
