Willie Taggart shakes up staff at USF, fires offensive and defensive coordinator

Following a 4-8 season, second-year South Florida coach Willie Taggart announced Monday the firings of offensive coordinator Paul Wulff, defensive coordinator Chuck Bresnahan and defensive backs coach Ron Cooper.

“I would like to thank Chuck, Paul and Ron for everything they have done in helping move the USF football program forward,” Taggart said. “They are first-class people and I wish them the best in their future endeavors.”

Wulff joined Taggart’s staff this year and also coached the Bulls’ offensive line. Under the former Eastern Washington and Washington State coach, South Florida’s offense ranked No. 118 in offensive F/+ out of 128 FBS teams.

Taggart hired Bresnahan as his defensive coordinator upon taking the USF job two years ago, but the Bulls’ defense regressed heavily from 2013 to 2014 despite the team’s two-win improvement. USF ranked No. 56 in defensive F/+ last season, but dropped to No. 101 in 2014.

Despite going from 2-10 in Year 1 to 4-8 in Year 2, USF dropped in F/+ from No. 99 to No. 122 -- the seventh-worst team as rated by F/+ this year.

USF beat 2-10 UConn, 2-10 Tulsa, 1-11 SMU and FCS-level Western Carolina for its four wins this year. After six straight seasons of eight or more wins, the Bulls haven’t made a bowl game since 2010.
