Cal and San Jose State schedule Bay area home-and-home

Separated by a distance of roughly 50 miles on I-880, California and San Jose State have not faced each other on the football field since 1996. That is going to change starting in 2019. The two schools have announced a home-and-home series that will be played over the course of four years.

Cal will host San Jose State on September 24, 2019. The Bears will play their second game ever at San Jose State four years later on September 16, 2023.The two schools have played 35 games, with Cal owning a 29-6 advantage on the all-time series tat dates back to 1899, but the bulk of the games were played after 1950. The two schools played regularly every year from 1962 through 1996, but the series went dormant after San Jose State moved into the WAC.

Cal already has a regional rivalry with Stanford in Pac-12 play, but adding another to the mix is not terrible. This also continues to add Pac-12 opponents to San Jose State’s future schedules. The Spartans have at least one Pac-12 school on the non-conference slate through 2020, with games with Oregon State, Utah, Colorado and Washington State spread throughout the upcoming schedules.
