Auburn football player Jakell Mitchell shot and killed

The new week begins on a very somber note and some tragedy. Auburn half back Jakell Mitchell was shot and killed at an apartment near campus Sunday. He was rushed to East Alabama Medical Center for treatment, and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Mitchell redshirted the 2014 season at Auburn, his first with the program. The Opelika, Alabama native was a three-star recruit out of high school according to Rivals.com. He was recruited by a number of programs, including Alabama, Florida, Florida State, LSU and Mississippi State and more. His father, Mario, played football at Troy.

Police are continuing to investigate this incident. No arrests have been made at this time.

UPDATE (10:23 a.m.): Auburn police released a statement saying Mitchell was found in the passenger seat of a car with the gun wounds.
