Reports: Gene Chizik to take over as Tar Heels’ DC

After two years away from the game, it appears Gene Chizik will be back on the sidelines for the 2015 season.

Thursday evening, ESPN.com‘s Joe Schad reported that Chizik has accepted the job as defensive coordinator at North Carolina. While the school has yet to confirm Chizik’s addition to Larry Fedora‘s coaching staff -- that’s expected to happen this week, perhaps as early as Monday -- one of the coach’s current employers did.

In addition to his duties at SiriusXM, Chizik serves as an analyst for ESPN’s SEC Network.

Chizik spent four seasons as Auburn’s head coach, winning a national championship in 2010, before being fired in November of 2012 coming off a 3-9 season. Prior to that, Chizik was the coordinator at UCF (1998-2001), Auburn (2002-04) and Texas (2005-06) before spending two seasons as Iowa State’s head coach.
