Not wanting to ‘hold him hostage,’ McElwain says Driskel free to leave

Exactly a week ago today it was reported that Jeff Driskel was exploring the possibility of transferring from Florida. As of today, Driskel can continue exploring, seemingly with no strings attached.

New Gators head coach Jim McElwain confirmed Saturday morning that the quarterback has asked for a release from his UF scholarship. While not specifically noting it, the intimation is that the release was granted and that there are no restrictions on the places to where Driskel may move.

“I know he’s asked for his release, and that’s up for him,” McElwain, according to 247Sport.com, said prior to the start of the Birmingham Bowl vs. East Carolina. “We all have choices and I’m not going to hold him hostage, certainly.”

Early indications are that Duke might be the favorite to land Driskel, although that still remains to be seen.

Driskel was the Gators’ starter in 2012 as the team went 11-2. His 2013 season ended after three games because of injury, however, and he lost his starting job this season after the Week 8 loss to Missouri.
