Miss. St. joins chase for transferring Wake lineman

Add another SEC team into the mix of schools pursuing a talented and experienced offensive lineman.

Yesterday afternoon, Cory Helms announced on Twitter that he has been offered a scholarship by Mississippi State. Additionally, Helms will visit Starkville this weekend, beginning Friday and running through Saturday.

Helms has also been offered scholarships by Penn State, South Carolina and Texas A&M. His visit after the Bulldogs will be to the Aggies on the 18th of this month, followed by trips to meet the coaching staffs of the Gamecocks (Jan. 23) and the Nittany Lions (Jan. 30).

“It is kinda like picking out a Victoria Secret’s model,” said Helms to 247Sports.com in describing the interest he’s received from his suitors. “All of these schools I am visiting are great programs and great opportunities for me. I am going into these visits with an open mind about everything and looking at how I would fit in.”

Late last week, Helms announced that he will be transferring from Wake Forest. The lineman will have to sit out the 2015 season if he ends up at an FBS school, but will have two years of eligibility remaining beginning in 2016.

A three-star member of Wake’s 2013 recruiting class coming out of high school in Georgia, Helms was rated as the No. 10 center in the country. The 6-4, 305-pound interior started 23 of the 24 games the Demon Deacons played in 2014. The only game he didn’t start was Senior Day in 2013.

Following that season, he was named a Freshman All-American.
