Ex-Virginia QB, former Cincinnati WR now at FCS Hampton

A month and a half after leaving Virginia, David Watford has a new football home.

Watford, Hampton University announced and as previously reported, is one of seven early enrollees at the FCS program. The Daily Press writes that head coach ConnellMaynor said that the starting quarterback position is, essentially, Watford’s to lose, though he expects competition there and throughout the roster.”

Watford, who will be eligible to play immediately in 2015, certainly comes to Hampton with a significant amount of experience.

Watford started all 12 games last season for the Cavaliers in 2013, but wasn’t exactly the definition of successful or productive. Watford finished that year 102nd in the country in passing efficiency while his 15 interceptions were the most in the ACC. As a redshirt sophomore, he barely completed 50 percent of his passes and tossed just eight touchdowns for good measure for the 2-10 Cavaliers.

He lost his starting job to Greyson Lambert during spring practice and ultimately fell to No. 3 on the depth chart. Watford played in just four games this season and attempted four passes.

In addition to Watford, Hampton announced the signing of former Cincinnati wide receiver Shakim Alonzo. Alonzo, a two-star member of the Bearcats’ 2012 recruiting class who redshirted his true freshman season, caught three passes in 2013 and none in 2014.
