Alabama’s Dee Liner released from scholarship to pursue transfer

Alabama defensive lineman Dee Liner has been released from his scholarship by the Crimson Tide, allowing him to pursue transfer options. The news is not being considered all that shocking given his lack of playing time in Alabama’s defense. The chance to play a more meaningful role is now available for Liner to pursue.

NCAA transfer rules require Liner to sit out the 2015 season if he transfers to another FBS conference program.

Per Liner’s Twitter account, it seems as though Liner is leaving Alabama on good terms with head coach Nick Saban and the staff. Sometimes a player just needs to find a better situation on the field, and Liner may not have been seeing that as a possibility at Alabama in 2015.

Officially been released from the UofA!! Wanna thank them for everything they have done for me and the opportunity they gave me! 💯🙌

Thank Coach Saban and his staff for everything! But it’s time for me to start a new Journey! — Dee Liner ✈ (@Liner_25) February 2, 2015

Liner was one of many talented recruits signed by Alabama in the Class of 2013, but do not think this suggests Alabama will be lacking in quality depth at the position in the fall. Alabama has been signing top classes for a few years now and has another ready to become official in a couple more days, so that is far from the concern for Alabama. Alabama is stocked full of defensive line talent for years to come.

Liner did not redshirt at Alabama so he can keep his two remaining years of eligibility.
