Tulane hires Saints assistant Carter Sheridan as wide receivers coach

Like a lot of coaches, Carter Sheridan is changing jobs. But unlike 99 percent of his peers, Sheridan gets to change jobs without putting a For Sale sign in his yard.

The 12-year New Orleans Saints assistant was announced as Tulane’s wide receivers coach on Tuesday. The Green Wave also announced the previously reported promotions of Jason Rollins to co-defensive coordinator and Doug Lichtenberger to linebackers coach/special teams coordinator.

“I am pleased to announce Doug Lichtenberger will be our special teams coordinator and linebackers coach, Carter Sheridan will coach our wide receivers and I have moved Jason Rollins into the co-defensive coordinator position,” head coach Curtis Johnson said in a statement. “We interviewed a lot of people and Doug was the best fit for what we do here. He’s a fantastic special teams coach and at the linebacker position, he can do that also. Carter was my assistant with the Saints and I promised him a job when I came to Tulane. We are glad to have him on board with us. Jason and Lionel are a great fit. Those guys work so well together.”

Johnson was the Saints’ wide receivers coach for six seasons before landing the Tulane job.

Sheridan, who started as an intern in the Saints’ marketing department, worked as something between the club’s wide receivers coach and a quality control assistant.

Tulane ranked 87th nationally in passing offense in 2014. Two of the Green Wave’s top three receivers were seniors, but Teddy Veal (40 receptions for 381 yards and a touchdown) and Terren Encalade (20 grabs for 235 yards) contributed heavily as freshmen.
