Husker DB coach to reportedly assume same position with Tar Heels

Little do I know when I woke up this morning it’d morph into “Lateral Move Day” in the world of college football.

Earlier today it was reported that Georgia’s wide receivers coach would be taking the same job at LSU. Now comes word that Nebraska’s defensive backs coach is moving laterally as well.

Thayer Evans of SI.com is reporting that Charlton Warren is leaving Lincoln to become the secondary coach at North Carolina. Warren would replace Dan Disch, who was canned by head coach Larry Fedora earlier this month.

In a statement, new NU head coach Mike Riley confirmed that Charlton was leaving for another job, although he didn’t specify which one.

“Charlton Warren has informed me of his plans to take a similar coaching position at another university,” Riley’s statement began. “This is an opportunity that Charlton feels is right for him and his family, and I respect his decision. We appreciate the valuable role Charlton has played in our transition to the University of Nebraska and wish him and his family nothing but the best. Charlton is an outstanding man and a bright, energetic football coach with a great future ahead of him in this profession.

“We will search for a talented teacher, coach and recruiter to fill the open position on our defensive staff. This is a high priority, but we will take the necessary time to find the individual who is the right fit to help lead the young men in the University of Nebraska football program.”

The hiring, when it comes to fruition, would complete Fedora’s nine-man coaching staff.

Warren recently completed his first season with the Cornhuskers. He was the lone holdover from Bo Pelini‘s staff retained by Riley. He’s also the second Cornhusker assistant to make the jump the Tar Heels, joining former defensive coordinator John Papuchis.

On the ‘Husker side, the loss of Warren is old hat for the football program.
