Purdue’s top WR ahead of schedule in ACL recovery

A significant knee injury cost Danny Anthrop the end of the 2014 season, but it shouldn’t cost him the beginning of the 2015 season. Or summer camp, for that matter.

In November of last year, the Purdue wide receiver sustained a torn ACL in the fourth quarter of an early-November loss to Nebraska. While the injury sidelined him for Boilermakers’ three remaining games, the rehab from the injury has been going well.

So well, in fact, that Anthrop, while not being a full participant, could see some non-contact action during spring practice that begins next month. Barring a setback, he’ll be ready for not only summer camp but for the summer workouts that precede them.

“I think May is a very realistic goal of when I’ll be back,” Anthrop told the Indianapolis Star. “That’s what I have my heart set on for my recovery date.”

When you consider that the injury wasn’t just a simple ACL tear, it’s borderline amazing that he’ll return as soon as he is. From the Star:

Surgery, though, revealed the injury was more than just an ACL tear. He had torn the lateral medical meniscus, sustained cartilage damage and suffered broken bones in his tibia and femur. Anthrop said he still has bone contusions, which may take longer to heal than the ACL.

Anthrop was easily the Boilermakers’ leading receiver in yardage at the time of the injury, topping the team with 616 (No. 2 was at 218). His 38 receptions, four receiving touchdowns and 16.2 yards per catch were also tops on the team.

He ended up leading the team in three of those categories (yardage, ypc and TDs) and second in the other (receptions) despite missing a quarter of the season.
