Eight-win season nets Dave Doeren raise, extension from NCSU

A turnaround 2014 season at North Carolina State that was very rewarding for Dave Doeren on the field has now turned into a 2015 offseason that’s even more rewarding off of it.

NCSU announced Friday afternoon that it has reached an agreement on a two-year contract extension with its head coach. Originally signed through the 2017 season, Doeren is now signed through 2019.

Additionally, Doeren’s guaranteed total pay has been increased from $1.8 million to $2.2 million in 2015. In 2014, Doeren was 10th in the 14-team ACC in compensation; his new contract would’ve placed him eight last year.

“When we hired Coach Doeren we realized he had the vision and commitment to elevate our program,” said NCSU athletic director Debbie Yow. “He is an outstanding leader, is committed to building a championship-level program the right way, and positively impacts the lives of our student-athletes. We look forward with anticipation to what he and his staff will do over the next several years.”

Doeren’s first season with the Wolfpack in 2013 was a rough one, a 3-9 year that included an 0-8 mark in conference play. Doeren and NCSU turned it around in 2014, though, going 8-5 in a season that ended with a win in the St. Petersburg Bowl.

The eight wins for Doeren were the most by a second-year Wolfpack coach since Mike O’Cain won nine back in 1994.

“My family and I are grateful for the opportunity to be a part of NC State, and for the tremendous support we’ve received from Chancellor (Randy) Woodson, Athletic Director Debbie Yow and the entire Wolfpack Nation,” said Doeren. “From an outstanding coaching staff to visible progress in adding and maintaining the best facilities, we have so much momentum right now and I’m excited for the future of NC State football.”

Doeren was named as the Wolfpack’s head coach in early December of 2012 and replaced Tom O’Brien, who was fired by the school just a week before the hiring of his replacement.
