So good-bye to the Bermuda grass surface at the University of Kentucky, because the final touches of a $120 million renovation to Commonwealth Stadium is underway and a new synthetic surface will replace it. At least it should look pretty good once it is installed.
Kentucky unveiled an image of the new field design, complete with the logo at midfield, the SEC logos at the 25-yard lines and a new checkerboard pattern in the end zones, and perhaps even on the sidelines. This image strongly suggests the checkerboard pattern will be far more subtle than Tennessee’s signature checkerboard end zone, and the Kentucky version will be covered up by the word “Kentucky” block lettering in the end zone. Kentucky has been incorporating a checkerboard pattern into the football uniform for the past five seasons as well, so it was only a matter of time before it hit the playing surface.
