Barring something unforeseen, it appears Florida will indeed reel in a well-traveled quarterback.
Citing a source with knowledge -- presumably of the situation -- The Oregonian is reporting that Luke Del Rio will complete his second transfer, a process that began in April as he announced he was leaving Oregon State, by heading to UF. Del Rio is expected to enroll at the Gainesville school at some point this summer.
It had previously been reported that Del Rio was likely to end up with the Gators in the coming months.
Barring the unexpected, Del Rio will have to sit out the 2015 season to satisfy NCAA transfer rules. That would then leave the player with two years of eligibility remaining beginning in 2016.
Del Rio, the son of former USC great and current NFL head coach Jack Del Rio, transferred to OSU from Alabama in January of 2014. He was granted immediate eligibility by the NCAA, and served as Sean Mannion’s primary backup last season as he completed 8-of-18 passes for 141 yards.
The fact that he was third in the Beavers’ spring pecking order behind true freshman Seth Collins and redshirt freshman Nick Mitchell likely played a role in his decision to seek out a third program in as many years.
Del Rio was a three-star member of the Tide’s 2013 recruiting class, rated as the No. 28 pro-style quarterback in the country and the No. 3 player at any position in the state of Colorado.
