Earlier today we noted that a former Tennessee football player who had transferred to Maryland had decided to transfer out of that Big Ten football program. Now, the Tennessee-Maryland pipeline continues, albeit in reverse.
Citing a UT program source, Wes Rucker of GoVols247.com was the first to report that Nathan Renfro is leaving the Terps and transferring to the Vols. The move, which has yet to be confirmed by either school, will serve as a homecoming as Renfro hails from the Nashville area.
Renfro would be a graduate transfer, meaning he’d be eligible to play immediately in 2015.
Renfro was the Terps’ starting punter each of the past three seasons after redshirting as a true freshman in 2011. His punting average increased every season, going from 39.7 in 2012 to 40.8 in 2013 to 41.5 last season.
Rucker offered up a succinct synopsis of what Renfro’s addition would mean for the punting situation in Knoxville.
Matt Darr, UT’s top punter last season, averaged 42.2 yards on 80 punts.
