Given release, QB Andrew Ford to transfer from Hokies

Another day, another FBS player taking his leave of the program in which he started his collegiate playing career.

The latest to see attrition hit its roster is Virginia Tech, with both the Roanoke Times and Newport News Daily Press reporting that Andrew Ford has asked for, and been granted a release from, his Tech scholarship. Ford is looking to transfer to an undetermined location to continue his career.

The fact that senior Michael Brewer and junior Brenden Motley were ahead of the redshirt freshman quarterback on the Hokies’ depth chart likely influenced Ford’s decision.

Should the Pennsylvania native transfer into another FBS program, he’d have to sit out the 2015 season. If the FCS is his ultimate landing spot, he’d be eligible immediately. He’d have three years of eligibility at the former level, four at the latter.

Ford was a three-star member of the Hokies’ 2014 recruiting class, with Rivals.com rating him as the No. 26 pro-style quarterback in the country and the No. 16 player at any position in the state of Pennsylvania. Pittsburgh had offered him a scholarship prior to his signing with Tech.

His true freshman season last year, and after enrolling early to participate in spring practice, Foster didn’t see any action at all -- the Times notes that he was almost pressed into service in the regular-season finale because of injuries -- and ended up taking a redshirt.
