Texas Tech cornerback La’Darius Newbold is transferring to Illinois State, both schools announced Tuesday.
“We are always trying to find depth in our secondary and were especially looking for some help at the safety position,” Illinois State coach Brock Spack said in a statement. “We like big players who can run at that position, and La’Darius fits that mold. He is a player who has the physicality we like as well and gives us some time to work with him and get him in the system.”
In three years with the program, Newbold appeared in four games and recorded two tackles.
Newbold will have two years of eligibility remaining and be able to play immediately for the Redbirds.
Illinois State finished 13-2 in 2014, falling 29-27 to North Dakota State in the FCS title game.
