Following a firearms-related arrest back in March, Delton Williams was left off Michigan State’s spring roster. Whether Williams gets back on the roster for the fall and beyond remains to be seen.
Using information gleaned from the university’s registrar office, mlive.com is reporting that “Williams is not currently taking classes during the summer term nor is he enrolled in any future semesters.” While Williams pleaded guilty to a reduced charge stemming from what was described as a road-rage incident, the website writes, he “violated MSU’s weapons ordinance and was subject to the school’s student judicial process, which is independent of any criminal court proceedings.”
Because the findings of that body are confidential, it’s unclear if the lingering suspension and non-enrollment are part of that judicial process.
There are some extenuating circumstances to the legal situation that could play a role in Williams’ potential return, though. The victim in the road-rage incident asked the university not to kick Williams out of school after he became aware of the fact that the running back lost a brother and close friend to murders that remain unsolved.
Still, it doesn’t appear that any decision on Williams’ future is in the offing in the near future.
“It will not be Mark (Dantonio‘s) decision; any time you have an issue like that, it’s a collective decision,” MSU athletic director Mark Hollis said last week. “To this point, Mark and, frankly, Delton, have handled it extremely well, but it’s a very serious concern.
“It will be a collaborative decision at the end of the day.”
Williams was third on the Spartans last season with 316 rushing yards and five touchdowns. With leading rusher Jeremy Langford‘s departure for the NFL, Williams has been expected to be a significant part of replacing the lost production.
