Despite having charges dropped, Colorado’s Josh Tupou no longer with Buffs

Whatever the reason may be, defensive lineman Josh Tupou will not be suiting up to play for Colorado this fall. That was confirmed Friday by Colorado’s associate athletics director David Plati, although the reason why this is the case was not something he would divulge.

Josh will not be a member of the team this fall,” Plati said in a statement, per The Denver Post. “Due to student privacy laws, we are not permitted to go into specifics as to why.”

Tupou was charged for assault after a house party turned ugly earlier this year. At the time, Tupou was charged with suspicion of second-degree assault, two counts of third-degree assault, criminal mischief, trespassing and reckless endangerment. He had turned himself into police shortly after being charged. However, those charges were all dropped a month later by the Boulder County District Attorney’s office. A case of mistaken identity was to blame according to the district attorney’s office, which allowed Tupou to walk freely and resume his daily routine without hesitation.

Tupou started 24 games for Colorado the past two seasons, earning All-Pac-12 honors in the process. This means the Buffs have another hole to fill on the defensive line. Plati did not say whether or not Tupou could return to the program in 2016, so his future is very much in doubt at this time. For a defensive line already struggling to slow down the run last season, the loss of one of its top players is hardly one to overlook. For a defensive line already struggling to slow down the run last season, the loss of one of its top players is hardly one to overlook. The unit is still improving and defensive line coach Jim Jeffcoat as spoken admirably of the improvement on the line. Colorado has added JUCO transfers Jordan Carrell and Leo Jackson to add some depth. Sampson Kafovalu also returns after missing the 2014 season for personal reasons.
