Transferring Terp Juwann Winfree looking at potential Pitt transfer

Suspended last month by Maryland for a second violation of the university’s student-athlete code of conduct, it was announced a week or so later that Juwann Winfree had decided to transfer from the Terps. As it turns out, he could end up back in his former school’s old conference stomping grounds.

The wide receiver confirmed to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that he will take a visit to Pittsburgh July 20. He has no current plans to visit any other programs, although that could change depending on how his Pitt visit goes.

Andre Powell coached running backs at Maryland in 2014 before moving on to coach Pitt’s special teams under Pat Narduzzi, serving as Winfree’s most direct connection to the Panthers. The Tribune-Review added that “Winfree, who initiated the contact with Pitt, said he has spoken on the telephone with offensive coordinator Jim Chaney and wide receivers coach Kevin Sherman.”

He has yet to be offered a scholarship by Pitt, although a successful visit could flip that particular script.

Back in November of last year, Winfree was suspended for a pair of games for violating the university’s student-athlete code of conduct.

Last season, Winfree caught 11 passes for 158 yards and two touchdowns. He would be forced to sit out the 2015 season, but would then have three years of eligibility remaining beginning in 2016.
