Bob Stoops will name starting QB when it’s earned, Perine suffers minor knee injury

With fall camps opening up and ongoing across the country, one of the most popular questions the majority of coaches must answer is when a starting quarterback will be named. That includes Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops, but he is not going to rush to a decision for the sake of making a decision.

Asked when he expects to name a starting quarterback for the Sooners in 2015, Stoops said it would be ideal to be able to name a starter as early as possible but stressed “we can’t force it until it’s earned.”

Oklahoma’s new offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley is expected to open things up on offense this fall, so having the right fit at quarterback is essential. The decision will likely will come down to texas Tech transfer Baker Mayfield and Trevor Knight.

In addition to fielding questions about the quarterback position, Stoops was also asked about whether or not running back Joe Mixon will ever be put in front of the media to address his past. Stoops said that is something that has been discussed, but was reluctant to say whether or not it will ultimately happen. Stoops also noted running back Samaje Perine suffered a minor knee injury in practice, but assured those wondering the record-setting running back should be fine for the start of the season. Perine is expected to miss some practice time.
