Tanner Mangum heaved the game-winning throw in BYU’s no-time-left win over Nebraska. Now, the backup has become the starter.
Following the Hail Mary win, Cougars head coach Bronco Mendenhall announced that Taysom Hill would be sidelined for the remainder of the 2015 season. Hill sustained a Lisfranc fracture in his foot earlier in the game and didn’t return, setting the stage for Mangum’s heroics.
This is the second consecutive season the senior quarterback’s season has ended prematurely. In early October, a broken leg and torn ligaments knocked him out for the last two months of 2014. He also tore ligaments in his knee halfway through his freshman season with the Cougars in 2012 and didn’t play again that year.
Taking over permanently for Hill is Mangum, who is a true freshman who joined the Cougars this year following a mission to Chile. Mangum completed 7-of-11 passes for 112 yards in relief of Hill Saturday.
