West Virginia players stabbed, dismissed from team

It’s hard to have a worse Saturday night/Sunday morning than the trio of West Virginia players Tyree Owens, Kenyatta Greene and Jamal Clay. In the hours just after midnight following the Mountaineers’ 41-17 win over Liberty, the group went to downtown Morgantown, W. Va., where they were promptly stabbed according to WV Metro News. Police have taken Alderson Broaddus University basketball player Devin Colston into custody on charges of malicious wounding.

The injuries are classified as non-life threatening.

“Mr. Colston is in custody because he committed the most serious offense. He’s the one that actually cut and stabbed the three individuals who ended up going to the hospital for treatment,” Morgantown police chief Ed Preston told the site.

Adding insult to injury, the program announced Monday that Owens, a redshirt freshman, and Greene, a walk-on, had been dismissed due to violations of team rules.

“Due to a violation of team rules, Tyree Owens and Kenyatta Greene are no longer part of the football team,” WVU associate athletic director Michael Fragale said in a statement. “We are appreciative of the efforts of the Morgantown Police Department and thankful that those identified will make a full recovery.”
