Florida DB Deiondre Porter charged with multiple felonies, suspended

It’s not been the most positive of weeks off the field for a Florida team that finds itself inside the Top 10 on it.

Sunday, it was confirmed that starting quarterback Will Grier had been suspended for the remainder of the season for using performance-enhancing drugs. Wednesday, head coach Jim McElwain confirmed that defensive back Deiondre Porter has been indefinitely suspended from the football program.

While McElwain didn’t reveal the specifics behind the suspension, Porter was arrested Wednesday on multiple charges. Four of those charges are felonies: two for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill, aggravated battery and firing a weapon into a vehicle or building. He was also charged with misdemeanor property damage of less than $200.

No details of what led to Porter’s arrest and charges have been revealed.

“He’s no longer with the football team,” McElwain said during his weekly teleconference. “He’s suspended indefinitely for obviously a choice. It’s his choice not to be with us. I’m sure you’ll read about it soon enough. It’s one of those things that we don’t obviously condone. Like I said, it was his choice.”

While he’s a backup cornerback, Porter is considered one of the Gators’ top special teams players. He’s played in four games this season after taking a redshirt as a true freshman last season.
