D3 Mount Union going for 100th straight regular season win

Over the past decade there have been two dominant forces in the world of Division 3 college football. The University of Mount Union has played for each of the last 10 D3 national championships and 17 of the past 20 D3 titles. As you might expect, the Purple Raiders have racked up a ton of regular season wins along the way. They have, and on Saturday they will go for a 100th straight regular season victory.

The No.1 team in Division 3 goes for the 100th straight regular season win on the road against Wilmington (OH) in an Ohio Athletic Conference game. Mount Union in the regular season is always to be considered an upset, but this one would be one of the biggest possible upsets. Wilmington is 1-5 and 0-5 in conference play this season. Mount Union has won each of the previous 17 meetings with Wilmington dating back to 1969. Last year Mount Union rolled up 42 points in the first quarter of a 74-7 rout, and the last time Mount Union played at Wilmington (2012) they returned home with a 66-0 victory.

Mount Union’s last regular season loss came on October 22, 2005 against Ohio Northern. Since going down 21-14, the Purple Raiders have gone on a tear through the schedule. The Purple Raiders won the Stagg Bowl later that season for the D3 national championship. Since then the only losses have come against another D3 power, Wisconsin-Whitewater. Wisconsin-Whitewater has defeated Mount Union in the Stagg Bowl six times since 2007 for Mount Union’s only losses.

Mount Union owns the NCAA record for most consecutive wins with a 55-game winning streak stemming from September 2, 2000 through December 13, 2003. During that stretch they outscored opponents 2,552-641. The 55-game winning streak actually snapped Mount Union’s previous NCAA record of 54 consecutive wins. Mount Union is 209-1 in their last 210 regular season games.

Oklahoma owns the FBS record for most consecutive wins, with a 47-game streak from 1953 through 1957.
