Hokies suspend WR Deon Newsome following DWI arrest

With another weekend in the rear-view, there’s the obligatory resetting of the good ol’ “Days Without An Arrest” ticker.

The latest to knock the thing back to double zeroes is Virginia Tech’s Deon Newsome, who was arrested Sunday morning and charged with driving while intoxicated and public intoxication. After becoming aware of the incident, Tech announced that the 20-year-old wide receiver has been indefinitely suspended from the football program.

Other than Newsome was approached by police in a Walmart parking lot at around 6:20 ET Sunday morning, no details of what led to the arrest and charges were detailed.

This is the second off-field incident for Newsome in less than a year. Last December, he was suspended from the Hokies’ bowl game for violating unspecified team rules.

Playing in 12 games in 2014, Newsome caught seven passes for 19 yards. He also rushed for 93 yards on 19 carries.

In 2015, the redshirt sophomore has recorded neither a reception nor a carry.
