Texas Tech starts fast, but No. 12 Oklahoma State chipping away

Texas Tech, looking for an upset of No. 12 Oklahoma State, jumped all over the unbeaten Cowboys early on with 17 points before the Pokes could dent the scoreboard. Texas Tech established a 24-7 lead later in the first quarter but the Red Raiders have let their visitors work their way back into the game for a 38-28 lead.

Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes tossed a 42-yard touchdown to Justin Stockman on the third play of the game, and capped a quick four-play, 97-yard drive with a short three-yard pass to Stockman about five minutes later.

Oklahoma State’s first score came about five minutes later when Blake Jarwin hauled in a 19-yard pass from Austin Hayes for a touchdown. Hayes was on the receiving end of a touchdown before the end of the first quarter when Cowboys quarterback found him for a 12-yard score inside the red zone, cutting Texas Tech’s lead to 24-14. That came after Jakeem Grant returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown after Oklahoma State’s first score.

Grant scored his second touchdown of the game early in the second quarter, the third touchdown pass thrown by Mahomes in the half, but Oklahoma State scored two touchdowns before halftime to chip away. The first came from Raymond Taylor on the ground, the second a 31-yard touchdown strike from Rudolph to Brandon Sheperd. Texas Tech scored once more before the end of the half when Mahomes punched one in from the goal line to bring an end to an eight-play, 62-yard drive.

Buckle up for what could be a wild second half. Oklahoma State will remain in the hunt for the Big 12 title if they can come back to win this one. If not, there will still be a chance Oklahoma State can grab the Big 12 but games against TCU, Baylor and Oklahoma still remain.
