Once thought to be the future of the position at Louisville, quarterback Will Gardner will instead spend his future somewhere other than with the Cardinals.
In an interview with the Louisville Courier-Journal, Gardner’s father, Glenn Gardner, confirmed that his son has decided to transfer from the U of L. The decision to transfer was triggered by Gardner’s desire for a better shot at playing time.
“He’s just looking for a new home for next year, a new place to play,” the dad told the Courier-Journal. “He’s just going to transfer, going to move on in life. ...
“He’s just looking for a place to play football, a place to get an opportunity.”
Gardner is expected to graduate in a couple of weeks, meaning he would be eligible to play immediately in 2016 if he moves on to another FBS school.
After serving as Teddy Bridgewater‘s backup in 2013, Gardner started seven games in 2014 before sustaining a torn ACL in a November win over Boston College. It was his second torn ACL, the first coming as a true freshman in 2012.
Gardner, a three-star quarterback coming out of high school in Douglas, Ga., did not play at all this season even as his father pronounced him 100-percent healthy. Freshman Lamar Jackson has emerged over the course of the season as the starter, while sophomore Kyle Bolin is the primary backup.
