Cardiac issue will sideline FSU’s Chad Mavety for at least the spring

A non-standard health issue will keep a key piece of Florida State’s offensive line for the foreseeable future.

Thursday, Jimbo Fisher confirmed that Chad Mavety will be sidelined for all of spring practice because of what’s being described as a cardiac issue. The condition affected the rising senior in the weeks leading up to the Peach Bowl this past season and ultimately forced him out of the postseason game.

More to the point, Mavety is out for at least the spring, meaning his availability for summer workouts and then summer camp -- and beyond -- is decidedly up in the air.

“We’re having to evaluate (him) and it may be tough,” Fisher said. “It’s nothing he can control or anybody can control. It’s something we found so it’s a safety issue.”

This past season, Mavety started eight of the nine games in which he played. Five of those starts came at left guard, three at right tackle. The Orlando Sentinel writes that Mavety “would have been penciled in as a starter at either spot this spring.”

As expected, starting quarterback Sean Maguire, who underwent ankle surgery in early January, will also miss all 15 spring practice sessions. Maguire and Mavety are two of 10 Seminoles who will not participate in spring practice because of various ailments.

FSU is set to open spring practice March 16.
