If Mykelti Williams is to live up to his recruiting pedigree, he’ll apparently do so somewhere other than where he began his collegiate career.
With rumors swirling regarding his status at Notre Dame, Williams, head coach Brian Kelly confirmed Wednesday, is indeed no longer a part of the Irish football program and has decided to transfer to an undetermined elsewhere. Kelly didn’t divulge a reason or reasons behind Williams’ decision to leave, although 247Sports.com has reported that the move has been in the works since February.
Entering the spring practice sessions earlier this month, the defensive back had been expected to compete for a starting job. At the very least, the Indiana native was expected to play a significant role in the Irish secondary this season as a redshirt freshman.
Williams was a four-star member of the Irish’s 2015 recruiting class, rated as the No. 16 safety in the country; the No. 3 player at any position in the state of Indiana; and the No. 237 player overall according to Rivals.com. The 5-11, 200-pound defensive back chose Notre Dame over offers from, among others, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Nebraska, Purdue and Wisconsin.
He took a redshirt as a true freshman last season.
