Severe weather forecast forces Texas Tech to nix spring game

A snow storm caused the cancellation of Toledo’s spring game last weekend. This weekend, a lot further west and south, Mother Nature is wreaking havoc on the spring finale of a member of the Big 12.

In a press release Thursday, Texas Tech announced that, because inclement weather forecasted for the area, Saturday’s spring game at Jones AT&T Stadium has been cancelled. The forecast in areas in and around Lubbock call for 2-4 inches of rain to go along with storms that could produce damaging wind, lightning and hail.

Instead of the spring game Friday, the Red Raiders will put the wraps on a practice session on Friday that’s open to the public. That session will begin at 3:30 p.m. local time inside of the football stadium.

“We want to take full advantage of each of the 15 practices the NCAA allocates during the spring,” Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury said in a statement. “Based on the weather projections from the National Weather Service, we feel our best opportunity to close spring practices in ideal conditions is Friday afternoon.”

“We do not want many of our loyal fans to drive to Lubbock on Saturday, only for us to cancel several our events as they arrive,” Tech senior associate athletics director Robert Giovannetti said. “That is why these decisions are being made today. The safety of our fans, coaches and student-athletes is always a priority when we host home events. We have communicated with the National Weather Service throughout this week and their projections do not indicate that our football or track and field programs will be best served by competing on Saturday.”
