WR/FB Tony Upchurch transferring from LSU

After a couple of position changes, Tony Upchurch has decided a change in scenery is in order.

Ross Dellenger of the Baton Rouge Advocate noted on Twitter that Upchurch had missed several practices as well as LSU’s spring game and, according to an unnamed source, plans to transfer from the Tigers football program. The New Orleans’ Times-Picayune‘s Jim Kleinpeter subsequently confirmed the news with the player himself.

“I’m glad LSU showed me things I didn’t know and made me a better man,” Upchurch wrote on social media according to Kleinpeter.

Upchurch was a three-star member of LSU’s 2014 recruiting class, rated as the No. 92 wide receiver in the country and the No. 80 player at any position in the state of Texas. After siting out his true freshman season as a redshirt, Upchurch played in eight games as a fullback in 2015. He had been moved back to receiver for the start of spring this year.

Should Upchurch transfer on to another FBS program, he’d likely be forced to sit out the 2016 season. He’d then have two years of eligibility remaining beginning in 2017.
