Police report: racial epithets directed at Sooners’ leading returning receiver prior to arrest

Oklahoma wide receiver Dede Westbrook was subjected to racial epithets prior to his arrest earlier this offseason, a police report obtained by The Oklahoman stated.

In late May, Westbrook was arrested and charged with one count of criminal trespassing. The incident that led to the arrest took place in his hometown of Cameron, Tex., although few details were available at the time.

According to The Oklahoman, the incident began when police were called to a residence because a male, subsequently identified as Westbrook, was inside the residence without permission. The woman who made the call, Brenda Vega, had blocked Westbrook’s vehicle from leaving the driveway, telling officers upon their arrival that she wanted the football player arrested and his vehicle towed.

The situation devolved from there, and took on a decidedly racial tone.

When an officer informed Vega that Westbrook’s truck would not be towed, she became more aggravated and said she did “not do black people” and used the n-word in stating that she did not want Westbrook on her property.

Vega continued to get more agitated and said she was going to have the whole black community of Cameron at her house, according to the report.

Westbrook’s charge stemmed from the fact that he acknowledged to police, after following them to the station, that he had “been asked not to return to the property after an altercation about a year before.” An OU spokesperson said in a statement at the time that "[w]e’re aware of it and are addressing internally.”

In his first season with the Sooners, Westbrook was second on the Sooners in receptions (46) and receiving yards (743). His 16.2 yards per catch was tops on the team for those with 20 or more receptions, while his four receiving touchdowns were tied for third.

For that production, Westbrook was named the Big 12’s Offensive Newcomer of the Year.

With Sterling Shepard off to the NFL, Westbrook is OU’s leading returning receiver.
