Groza Award watch lister Trent Domingue leaving LSU after scholarship wasn’t renewed

This is something you don’t see often.

Exactly one week ago today, LSU’s Trent Domingue was one of 30 kickers named to the Lou Groza Award preseason watch list. On Wednesday, Domingue took to Twitter to reveal that he is leaving LSU because his scholarship wasn’t renewed.

At the SEC Media Days Thursday, head coach Les Miles said he attempted to talk Domingue into holding off on a decision to leave, apparently to no avail.

Miles says he told Domingue to wait before deciding to leave. LM thought he could get him a scholly by August. #LSU

Les says Trent Domingue received scholarship last year “by way of one-year award.” Thinks also “had other reasons to want to go.” #LSU

As Domingue will be moving on as a graduate transfer, he’d be eligible to play immediately in 2016 if he takes the FBS route.

Last season, Domingue connected on 13-of-17 field goal attempts. His main claim to fame, however, was catching what proved to be the game-winning touchdown pass on a fake field goal against Florida this past October.

With Domingue apparently on the way out, the kicking duties will likely fall to Colby Delahoussaye. In 2013 and 2014, Delahoussaye converted on a combined 24-of-29 field goal attempts.
