Mich. St. player allegedly slapped by Draymond Green to transfer

That must’ve been one hell of a slap.

Michigan head coach Mark Dantonio announced in a press release Wednesday night that Jermaine Edmondson has been granted a release from his scholarship and will transfer from Michigan State. The announcement came on the same day that a police report indicated Edmondson had been involved in an incident with former MSU hoops star and current Golden State Warrior Draymond Green, one in which Edmondson was allegedly slapped in the face and Green was charged with assault.

Officially, though, the transfer had nothing to do with that incident; rather, a desire for an increased opportunity for playing time triggered Edmondson’s decision.

“In discussions with Jermaine Edmondson following spring practice and in the weeks thereafter, it became clear that Jermaine wanted to play a larger role on the team,” a statement from Dantonio read. “After consulting with him in the summer, he felt it was in his best interest to finish his playing career elsewhere. We have granted his immediate release to transfer to another institution to have that opportunity.”

As a graduate transfer, Edmondson would be eligible to play immediately at another FBS program if that’s the transfer direction he so chooses.

The 22-year-old Edmondson, who turned 22 the day of the incident, would have been a redshirt senior cornerback for the Spartans in 2016. Edmondson appeared in 38 games during his time in East Lansing, including all 14 games in 2015. Last season, he recorded career-highs in tackles (24), tackles for loss (2.5), pass break-ups (three) and fumble recoveries (two).
