Texas ‘loses’ 2015 four-star WR Ryan Newsome to transfer

Texas has seen an influx of four-star talent from Baylor of late. Now, however, they’re seeing a four-star exit -- and that may not actually be a bad thing.

In a tweet posted to his personal Twitter account Sunday night, Ryan Newsome announced that he has decided to transfer from Charlie Strong‘s UT football program and continue his collegiate playing career at an undetermined elsewhere. In the social media missive, the wide receiver didn’t give a specific reason for his decision, although he did state that “it is... necessary for my career going forward.”

Newsome was a four-star member of the Longhorns’ 2015 recruiting class, rated as the No. 27 receiver in the country and the No. 32 player at any position in the talent-rich state of Texas. As a true freshman last season, Newsome caught four passes for 23 yards.

Losing Newsome, though, may actually help UT as it relates to the team’s plundering of rival BU. From the Austin American-Statesman:

Newsome’s decision actually helps the Longhorns’ overall scholarship numbers. After taking in four Baylor signees earlier this summer, the Longhorns were thought to be at their 85-scholarship maximum, possibly one or two over. However, school officials were not worried at the time.
