Former Tar Heel RB Ty’Son Williams added to Gamecocks’ roster

One of the top high school football players in the Palmetto State last year is coming home.

At some point over the weekend, Ty’Son Williams’ name was added to South Carolina’s official online roster. The program has yet to officially announce the addition, although USC has been rumored as a potential landing spot -- via the GI Bill to circumvent UNC’s restrictions -- ever since North Carolina confirmed in mid-June that the running back had decided to transfer out of Larry Fedora‘s football program.

No specific reason was given for the departure, although some have suggested that Williams wanted to play closer to his hometown of Sumter, SC. And, for those who are curious, Sumter is approximately 45 miles from Columbia, 220 miles from Chapel Hill.

A four-star member of UNC’s 2015 recruiting class, rated as the No. 22 back in the country and the No. 5 player at any position in the state of South Carolina. He chose UNC over offers from, among others, Clemson, Georgia, Michigan, Mississippi State, Notre Dame and Wisconsin.

As a true freshman, Williams appeared in six games. He carried the ball 19 times for 57 yards in limited action.

To satisfy NCAA transfer rules, Williams will likely have to sit out the 2016 season. He would then have three seasons of eligibility remaining beginning in 2017.
