Baylor suspends OL Rami Hammad, charged with felony stalking

Baylor just simply can’t find its way out of the cloud of negative headlines.

According to the Waco Tribune-Herald, offensive lineman Rami Hammad was arrested Monday on a felony charge of stalking. Hammad was allegedly stalking an ex-girlfriend on campus, following her around to classes multiple times.

At one point, a BU professor came to the woman’s aid. From the Tribune-Herald:

The woman told Hammad, a 21-year-old junior from Irving, to leave before she went into the class, but he waited for her outside, according to the affidavit. Seeing him waiting, the woman was afraid to leave alone and asked for the professor’s help.

She and the professor left together, and Hammad followed them to the professor’s office, where he began knocking on the door for several minutes, according to the affidavit.

After unsuccessful calls to Baylor athletics, the professor and student decided to call police, saying they feared for their safety, according to the affidavit.

On at least two occasions, police told Hammad to have no further contact with the woman. The lineman failed to comply, leading to his arrest yesterday.

Hammad told police he “just wanted to talk to the victim in an attempt to mend their troubled relationship.” The victim says she feared for Hammad’s mental health, and that he had allegedly spoke of suicide. The woman also reported past physical abuse at the hands of Hammad.

Because of the situation, Hammad has been indefinitely suspended from the football program.

Hammad transferred to Baylor from Texas in August of 2014. After sitting out the 2014 season, Hammad played in 13 games last season. He had exited spring this year as the Bears’ starting right guard.
